Fellow Enthusiasts and Scholars of the Work of Robert Ervin Howard, A preview of content for Issue #5 of the reinvigorated and (to be) semi-annually-published THE DARK MAN: The Journal of Robert E. Howard Studies is as follows (alphabetically by contributor's last names): Fred Blosser, "When Kull Rode the Range" Rusty Burke, "All fled, All done " Frank Coffman, "Editor's Welcome," (and brief explanations of the two Letters sections: "The Cairn," and "Lock Box 313") Charles Hoffman, "Escape from Eden: Genesis Subverted in 'The Garden of Fear'" Gary Hoppenstand, "Soldiering for Fortune: Robert E. Howard's Kirby O'Donnell and 'The Treasures of Tartary'" Glenn Lord, a tidbit of info on a mail-order book catalogue belonging to REH. Gary Romeo, "'The Tower of the Elephant': A Modern Fable" and a sidebar of info on "James Allison's Incarnations" Edward Waterman, "Dating Wolfshead" It seems that the publishers for the first four numbers of the journal, Necronomicon Press, are phasing out of the small press publication game. This being the case, one possible solution to the problem of publication for Issue 5 and subsequent numbers is to create a not-for-profit corporation(501-C3 educational) or a non-profit (501-C5) entity. Estimates for the 500-copy run are between $1200 to $1500, and the costs below reflect the high likelihood of overhead costs and inventory, since I estimate no more than half of these will move relatively quickly. Some spec copies will be sent to selected college/university and city libraries and a few copies need to be given to the accrediting agencies: MLA and MHRA for inclusion in annual bibliographies. Successful contributors will each receive three (3) copies of any issue in which their work appears. If sales greatly exceed expectations, then the subscription rates below could be adjusted, the underlying premise being to keep the publication solid and operational. The concept herein presented is to get enough money together to get the project off and rolling. This I herein propose, the following not needing immediate incorporation in order to act as the above, but which can quickly evolve into a specialist publishing group for REH-related material, specifically TDM. The members of the Board of Reviewers and Consultants for The Dark Man (see the new mirror web-site at: http://www.pop-lit.com/rehowardjournal ) would oversee and legitimize the keeping of a bank account for the purpose of funding this journal and enabling the jobbing out of its printing for publication). A full accounting of revenues and expenditures will be posted in each issue of TDM. The rates listed below are inclusive of postage. Cover price of the TDM #5 (and for the foreseeable future) = $7.50 Advance (pre-publication) per copy sale = $6.00 $12.00 for a 1 year subscription. 2 Year Subscription = $22.00 Patron/Sponsor amounts of $25.00 and up (in $5.00 increments, please) are most welcome. These would also obtain the number of future issues to the number of the amount given in patronage/sponsorship divided by $5.00.
