Hi, I'm using reiserfs for about less than a year and I'm having some
problems. The problems are very erratic, the reiserfs works just fine for
some time (1, 2 or 3 months) and then I start to get kernel panics and
stuff like that. If I make a reiserfsck over the partition (I use it for
the root partition), I get some errors about bitmaps (I couldn't get the
errors to post it here because I lost the log. What I do is start the
system with a rescue disk, I backup all my root partition data (I can copy
the data without lost! this is weird), I make a new reiserfs and copy all
over again. After doing this the system works fine again.
First I thought it was I overcloacked my PC, but I don't have it
overcloacked now and it happend again.
Then I thought it could be NFS bugs, but now I'm not using NFS on that
partition and it happend again.
Then I thought it was a kernel bug, but I'm now using 2.4.9 (I allready
read the RECOMENDED 2.4.10-pre4 in the page).
Then I read the FAQs and you say that it only could be a hardware fail, but
I have my /home partition over a LVM with reiserfs and it's working fine
since I created, and since then, my root partition crashed twice.
I thought it could be some fail on the kernel's IDE controller bug for my
Promise controller, but I have the half of my LVM volumen in the same
physical disk that the root partition.
I thought it could be bad sectors on the disk but I had this problems the
first time with one disk and 2 more times in another one. And this time I
chequed the disk for errors with (e2fsprogs's) badblocks and it looks fine.
So, I can't find an explanation about my problems and much less a solution.
Please, if somebody know what it could be, please tell me.
Here's some data about my system:
AMD Duron 800MHz - 640MB RAM
ASUS A7V motherboard with onboard VIA IDE Controller (ide1) + onboard Promise
ATA100 IDE Controller PDC20265 (ide0).
Debian GNU/Linux Sid - kernel 2.4.9 with lvm 1.0.1rc1 patch
Western Digital Caviar WD205BA ATA66 HD (hda)
Quantum Fireball Plus AS40.0 ATA100 HD (hdc)
Both HD are connected to Promise Controller and this are the partitions:
/dev/hda1 * 1 2 16033+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda2 35 238 1638630 b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda3 3 18 128520 83 Linux
/dev/hda4 239 2495 18129352+ 8e Linux LVM
/dev/hdc1 1 248 124960+ 82 Linux swap
/dev/hdc2 * 249 279 15624 83 Linux
/dev/hdc3 280 9192 4492152 83 Linux
/dev/hdc4 9193 77557 34455960 8e Linux LVM
Where hdc3 is the root reiserfs partition, and hda4+hdc4 are the LVM /home
partition with reiserfs too. /home partition never "crashed" so far.
