The recommendation is still to get something newer. Here's a couple of
options for you, listed in the order of preference
1) Check on any Mandrake ftp site that carries Cooker development.
Install (NOT UPGRADE!!!) the latest kernel that's there (work has just
started on 2.4.13 kernels (first one appeared Monday I believe). Be aware
that you should check your lilo.conf for correctness after you install.
You will probably also have a lot of dependencies forcing you to also install
packages such as initscripts, mount, and a few others. Also be aware
that Cooker is a work in progress. It may very well break your system.
Supermount may or may not work. It is the very nature of Cooker. If
you are not comfortable with being able to repair a system that you have
screwed up the boot kernel, then this step might not be for you.
2) Check on any Mandrake ftp site that carries the updates. Look in the
8.0 directory and there's a 2.4.7 kernel package there. It appears to
be 2.4.7 with some 2.4.8 backports. You'll also have to upgrade the
initscripts, mount, reiserfsutils, etc. Be aware that 2.4.7 has some
security issues.
3) Repeat of #2 but with the 2.4.8 kernel package that shipped with
Mandrake 8.1. Same caveat.
4) Download linux-2.4.13.tar.bz2 from ftp.kernel.org and recompile
everything from scratch (can probably just copy over the old .config
from /usr/src/linux-2.4.3 and run make oldconfig and answer any new
questions that pop up--not tested, not guaranteed to work since
Mandrake kernels have lots of patches applied).
