I do not know, maybe something became wrong in memory still being correct on
disk.

I just tried to:
tar cf - dir-with-150mb-of-mp3s | gzip > mp3.tgz
zcat mp3.tgz > /dev/null

without any problems. I was using 2.4.8 where reiserfs is similar to reiserfs
in 2.4.7. The only differences between them is that extern inlines are
replaces with static inlines. (Aslo, there was a report from Sergey S.
Kostyliov about the same problem under 2.4.8)

Could you please try to get the same problem under 2.4.10?
gzip -t tar-ball.gz ?
How much memory is there?

Thanks,
vs
