Ouch, sorry ray, for some reason I only saw the first reiserfs line.
I suspect it has something to do with the number of sub directories,
but that is a wild guess.  I'll try to reproduce.

How slow are those scsi disks?  I don't think data=journal will help
ext3 here, unless you've changed postmark to fsync.
