I discovered that reiserfsck now exists so I ran that on /dev/hdb4 with no errors and only two slight free space/map errors on hdb2 which makes it all the more puzzling that the kernel module has been bombing out.
My conclusion is that either I have a hardware stability problem, or that there is a kernel problem, or perhaps acpi, I'll look into it further.
Just before the oopsing though, there had not been lots of reiserfs activity.
I'll let you know what else I learn.
