I'm guessing this is a threading issue. Can you add a print statement: print `ds.relax_gui.global_setting`
before these lines and see what that gives? This behaviour just should not happen - ever - in Python. The error is incomprehensible, it is a paradox that cannot happen in a programming language. This is very, very strange!
