it is supposed to happen with a plugin, yes. that has not yet been 
implemented. what is in the branch right now is code that can be built if 
ksecretservice is available. which means right now to make it work one needs 
to build kdelibs, ksecreteservice, then kdelibs again.

not great, but i believe at least one major distro is planning on doing this.

in 4.9 this should be resolved using the plugin approach mentioned.
