Settlement between city, temple OK'd Council approves deal to buy, move historic house 06/27/03 By JOHN PECK Times Staff Writer [EMAIL PROTECTED] The Huntsville City Council on Thursday night approved a settlement in a 2-year-old federal lawsuit that challenged the city's enforcement of historic preservation regulations. Temple B'Nai Sholom, a synagogue in the Twickenham Historic Preservation District, has argued the city's Historic Preservation Commission violated the temple's First Amendment right of freedom of religion by denying it permission to demolish an old house on temple property to make room for an expansion. Experts said the temple's lawsuit could have been a major test case of the federal Religious Land Use Act, which protects a religious institution's use of its property for worship purposes.
