Back at | work, with 1237 ttf fonts, an Ati Rag128Pro, PIII733, 768Megs of Ram, it | takes about 62 seconds to open a new copy of konqueror (depends on load, | of course). That's 62 seconds of full cpu usage. Noteworthily, it takes | the same amount of time whether I'm using xftcache or not (verified using | the export XFT_DEBUG=128 && xterm -fa mono-14 test). I'm beginning to | wonder if this is necessarily a RENDER issue, as it might be a qt or kde | problem (i.e., not just konq as it takes kmail about as long to start). Is | there anyone else out there using kde 2.2.1, a *ton* of ttf fonts, and AA? | I would be interested in hearing your results.
Hi David! I found that I need to keep number of TTF/Type1 fonts *under 300* to have Konqueror starting quickly (<3 sec.) Increasing number of fonts to 500-600 increases Konq's startup time to about 6 sec. here (PIII/600, 128MB RAM, KDE 2.2.1, Qt 2.3) I believe this is XF issue, and related directly to the number of fonts used. (you can't test it with GNOME, as GNOME 1.4 doesn't support AA, so you experience this problem only in KDE) Actually, I am thinking now to limit number of fonts to 10-20 - as I don't use the rest of my fonts at a moment. Of course it would be nice if problem can be fixed in some other way... | | So, to sum up, I'm back to: turning on AA makes almost all qt apps take | *forever* to come up, forever being a time around one minute. I am | *very* willing to help debug, I got a lot of sleep over the weekend, so I | should be much more coherent and non-stupid. IMO *quick fix* is to decrease number of installed fonts (in /etc/X11/XftConfig) You still can keep "full install" for another Linux partition - and compare it with "limited one" from time to time ;-) | | Thanks!
