I compiled my freetype with hinting and enabled LCD subpixel rendering. It really looks good, generally. I have a sneaking suspicion that the hinting doesn't work well with rgba. Could this be correct? How can I tell what the hinting is affecting?
Also, is any effort made to correct color fringing? It makes a big difference, as shown on http://grc.com/cttech.htm Especially at small font sizes, fringing is clearly evident on my setup.
