Render is already a part of XFree86 and is supported in all core XFree86 servers. Xft is already an integral part of Qt and Gtk+. Legacy X organizations and vendors will each have to decide when to support them. I was recently surprised by OpenOffice which uses Render for all text output. It looks like Sun's application developers have decided the time for change is now.
