Dear Avinash;
This may be a case of the blind leading the blind because I am not a member
of the open source team. I am an experienced UNIX user and developer and do
know a little about X server crashes.
You did not mention which distrubution you were using.
1. Go to the "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts" directory.
Do an "ls -l" to see if the following directories exist.
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 61440 Dec 20 18:22 100dpi
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 61440 Dec 20 18:22 75dpi
2. If they are distroyed, do a system update just like you were updating
from 7.1. This has worked for me. In other words update 7.2 with 7.2 or
try to reinstall the fonts with rpm form the installation disk.
3. If you were in SuSE you can do an "init 3" in a shell window and do
either "sax" or "sax2" and reconfigure the Xserver. That sometimes works.
The chioce will depend on the version of XFree86 you are using,
4. Another place to look for clues is the
"/var/log/XFree86.0.log/var/log/XFree86.0.log
Examine the file to make sure which
file is being used for the configuration.
It is either
/etc/X11/XF86Config
or
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
That's the best I can do. Some others may have better infomation.
