As far as I know, the differences between FT2 and FT1 when in comes
to monochrome rendering of native TrueType hints have been fixed in
the recent 2.1.0 release..

Could it be that two versions of FreeType are installed on the system.
For example, is there something in /usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.so _and_
in /usr/lib/libfreetype.so that do not correspond to the same shared
object (DLL) ??
