I've just made a fix that lets pango work with Xft1 -- the problem is that
it was asking for only unicode fonts in a way that made it never see *any* 
fonts.

Can you give either current XFree86 CVS or my fcpackage a try and see
if it works?  Breaking existing applications is a serious no-no.

fcpackage (which contains stand-alone versions of Xft1, Xft, fontconfig
