I'd like to utilize the remotes for a couple of micor full blown
repeaters I have but can't find any info regarding wiring and such. 
Also, I'm not sure what the purpose of this box thing is for.


I'm sure the Motorola-saavy guys will jump in with exact descriptions for your part numbers, but you have either DC or tone remotes, and the box is either a DC termination panel or a tone remote adapter (those are the terms I'm familar with, anyway, from building base station controllers with DC termination and the tone detection built in).

In the case of the DC scheme, there's a DC current loop between the remote and the terminator, which is keyed by the PTT bar in the handset. A relay or opto isolator in the terminator detects the current and keys the transmitter. More sophisticated systems can generate several different current levels to activate different functions at the terminator. The DC scheme can only be done when copper pair continuity is available. The DC voltages can get as high as 100-150V because the current must be a certain value regarless of the resistance of the loop.

In the case of the tone scheme, the remote generates different tone sequences for "monitor" (turn off CTCSS), key on F1, key on F2, and so on. A commonly-used sequence begins with a burst of 2175 Hz at a high level ("guard tone"), followed by a burst of one of several "function tones", followed by continuous 2175 Hz at low level for as long as the PTT is keyed ("keying tone"). Another standard begins with a 2300 Hz guard tone, followed by a 2300 Hz keying tone. The job of the tone remote adapter is to detect the tones and notch out the keying tone so it doesn't disturb the listener.

Both systems are half-duplex; the user of the remote talks and listens alternately.
