Bob,
The first thing to try would be to rock your Bird with a circular motion
to see if the needle can move. If it doesn't then it is stuck and will
probably require disassembly of the meter movement. This is not for the
faint of heart but can be done, especially if one has more time than money.
If the needle swings freely with the twisting test then you can test it
electrically quite simply. A double A (or any 1.5 volt) cell in series with
a 100 k ohm resistor should drive your 30 ua meter movement to about half
scale. (If I remember Ohm's Law correctly. It's late.) You can just apply
this simple circuit directly to the terminals on the back of the meter
itself. First, remove whatever is connected to one of the meter posts. Then
apply the battery and series resistor to the two meter posts observing
polarity. If the meter does go to half scale then it's OK and your problem
is not the meter movement itself. If it doesn't go to half scale then the
meter movement is defective in some way. It may be open in which case it's
time for a new meter movement.
