I've watched this thread and can't resist contributing my experiences. I supported a Spectrum SCR-1000 VHF repeater for my ham club for more than 3 years. It never operated to our satisfaction. Key problems:
1. Transmitter spurs caused by leaky caps that overheated. 2. Poor power supply design - Darlington TO-3 pass transistor would fail short circuit, placing 18V unregulated on the TX and RX. 3. Original receiver was obsoleted by Spectrum as it lacked adequate IF selectivity. The new RX wasn't much better. 4. Receiver pre-selector had a higher noise figure than the front end of the RX. The repeater actually heard better without the pre-selector. We finally dumped it and got a GE 100w Master. After we learned to improve cooling and run it at 80w rather than to reduce power in the PA, it was clean and worked flawlessly. My two cents... Just a few weeks ago we had a person come on this mail list, & ask about spectrum repeaters. He was told all the horror stories from many different people about all their problems. Then he announced that he thinks he can make one work using better technical standards (or some foolish statement like that). Yahoo!
