Wish I were the original author... I lifted it from one of my high power rf amplifier crowd... friends. He made the statement years ago in a similar type of email exchange. Holds up well in the test of time. > I was only heading off the obvious > thoughts of ONE person who (several > weeks ago) claimed he could make the > Spectrum gear run correctly when the > rest of us said it was not a good idea. Might have actually been me. After a bout last year with a spectrum tx strip, I believe the small trimmer caps used in the tx chain are the bad news source. They do not appear to handle mid and higher stage rf current very well, in fact every Spectrum TX strip I've repaired in the last two years suffered from at least one bad variable cap. In short, the supplied small variable capacitors are simply not rated for rf. I've actually measured them changing with modest rf applied. This is one of the major problems within this type of tx strip (ie not limited to spectrum strips). I simply desolder the caps in the last half of the tx chain and replace them with similar rf rated trim caps I have here and the unit becomes quite stable. The unstable power and spur generation problems pretty much go away after a proper alignment and the unit chugs along quite nice. What was a trouble maker is now a work horse. This type of problem first reared its ugly head with an early hybrid GE mobile radio. Can't remember the model but it was a real _______________ . I would seriously consider trading a complete UHF Spectrum TX/RX setup from anyone would would prefer a virgin UHF GE MVP. I like the reworked spectrum Strips that much. cheers skipp Yahoo!
