While fusing the negative lead is extra added insurance, I have also started putting diodes across the 12v input line inside my radios (cathode to +) for that time when someone plugs it in backwards. (of course not me!) This gets away from the voltage drop of using a bridge but still protects the equipment from reverse voltage.
Lately I have been using 16v zeners (1N5353B) across the 12v lines. If someone reverses the polarity it blows the fuse, if the voltage should go much above 16v it also blows the fuse. I've also put these diodes inside cigarette lighter plugs (after the fuse) on my DC charger and power cords. Just one more bit of insurance for some of the equipment that gets used in uncontrollable emergency field situations. Art - KC7GF Yahoo!
