Perhaps the device referred to is the Nuvistor?
These were used in VHF applications. [e.g. 6CW4] They
are metal and don't look all that different from early transistors.
The size is similar also, the Nuvistor is 0.400" dia. and a TO-5 is
0.335" diameter.
