I tried making a light pole using 3 10' sections of 3" or 4" (I forget)  The
couplings are a definite weak spot. The pipe is threaded at that point
making it weaker and the connection just isn't very rigid no matter how
tight you make it.  We ended up welding the couplings just to keep it from
flopping around.  I wouldn't trust putting anything substantial up there
without reinforcing the joints somehow.
