I agree... I have used EchoStation in the past as an announcement machine
and also a way to do the ARRL Report.  Very reliable...I don't use it as a
repeater controller but I am sure it would do just fine as others have
stated. It does not take very much to build a repeater and $10 will do the
trick but it would take $thousands more to make a voice announcement machine
which EchoStation does for $20 or so dollars.

I also look at it as support for EchoLink since when I paid for the program
Johnathan was not taking any $$ for that application. Don't know if it has
changed or not but I looked at it as a donation of sorts.

I'm running Echostation on my repeater using a Win 2000K Pro OS. Its
very stable, very reliable. I have built the interface into a DB-9
shell using a transistor, a resistor and a diode. Heck, the DB-9 and
the shell was even recycled so the whole cost of the interface is way
under $10. If one was to build from new parts, its all available from
radio shack.
