I agree GMRS is the way to go for family communication, see if there are any 
grms licensed repeaters in your area and join the group of users after you get 
your license for gmrs. or see if your xyl will go to one of the weekend classes 
like Gordon west's to get her license 
and she can share your equipment, one of the locals got his wife to 
take the class and she passed he got her a maxtrac and programmed 16 channels 
of 440 repeaters and simplex to keep it simple for her and she loves it, 
(except when the repeater controller mistakes her high pitched voice for dtmf 
tones and starts goes beep beep beep ) ya gotta love it.....bob
