Got my words mixed up.... should have been  "I had to buy a new one for the guy I borrowed it from and still had to come up with an antenna for the repeater it was being used on."

Yes, they have rod/coil construction. I know from taking one apart that didn't last only months before lightning destroyed it.

That was a painful experience since it was a borrowed antenna. I had to buy a new one for the guy I borrowed it from and still had to come up with an antenna for the repeater it was being been on.

I have had excellent long-term luck with the Sinclair SRL-229.  It's a large aperture (23+ foot) fiberglass radomed stick, but is not built like the stationmaster with opposing sections of large (copper water pipe) coax.  I have had experience with several that have been up for 20+ years without failure in the duplex mode.  I don't know how they are made internally because I have never had to take one apart.  A Sinclair Engineer told me they were not made like their competition, and might possibly be solid rod with phasing coils between them.

Any fiberglass radomed antenna will suffer greatly from Corona and Precipitation Static, especially when top mounted.  This was a big deal until the Static Buster was developed, tested, and proven to nearly eliminate the problem.
