A certain version of the RCA ... Super-Carfone' ??
the hang up box was used to turn off the transmitter
filaments during stand-by time. The transmitter
filaments were instant heating and were usually hot
by the time you brought the microphone to your mouth
to speak.

In Motorola, if the crystal oven was a black
bakelite housing, it was a 65 degree C oven.
If the oven was a gold irridited (sp?) housing,
it was an 85 degree C oven.
It got to the point I could tell the temperature
of the oven just by touching with my hand -
especially the 85 degree C ovens.
