The original Hamtronics circuit values were not 
the best for their version of the MC3357 and/or 
MC3359 ic layout.  There were also issues of 
unwanted on board oscillation based on how the 
boards were constructed. 

The above two ic chips are/were found in many a 
scanner and two way radio circuits. I "lifted" 
values from other circuits and tried various 
combinations until I was happy with the result. 

The older Motorola Data Book for Communication 
IC's has data and suggestions for both the 
mentioned chips.
