Keep up the good work. I think your poll is a good idea.
I was one of those who unsubscribed a few weeks ago when we had a major
outbreak of the "Russ-and-Dean show". Couldn't stay away, though, and a
couple of weeks later re-subscribed. You run a good sig.
I believe that Cooktowers is probably a fine company with which to do
business. I recently got a quote from them on an item and it was very fair
and competitive. I plan on doing business with them. That said, I don't
think Dean is generating a lot of business for them here lately.
As far as Russ and his radio station goes, Good luck! You'll need it.
Having been an owner in the late 70's and 80's I came to know the meaning of
"Money Pit." Went back to engineering and haven't regretted it.
As far as "build" goes , yes, a lot of us "build" repeaters. Of course,
any yoyo with enough money can buy a box and put it up but where is the
satisfaction? A large part of ham radio to me is seeing a need, collecting
the parts, and putting the equipment together to fill that need. Putting a
machine together that works better than a commercial off-the-self one for
ten per cent of the money is challenging and very satisfying to me. I have
always built controllers from scratch, too, thinking that the ready-mades
were cheating somehow. But now they are so cheap it's probably not worth the
hassle to figure out the logic, dig through the data books, make a board,
interface, debug, etc.
IMHO, the Micor and Mastr II receivers are the best repeater receivers
ever made in terms of value. There may be a better receiver made but not for
anywhere near the same money. There are probably enough parts out there to
keep them running another 30+ years and far beyond.
