Its probably the RF
amp or mixer transistor. The ER41C is a better receiver, especially for
repeaters. It has no RF amplifier, just like the M2. The low audio sounds like
the audio output transistor. It is mounted all alone on the heatsink. The
"A" model didn't have much audio to begin with and the output
transistor is notorious for failing.
BTW, the ER41C is
my favorite repeater receiver. It comes already completely shielded and
bypassed, it works great, very reliable, and very cheap (usually free). With a
good preamp (if your noise floor will allow), and an RLC Micor squelch, the
sensitivity is unbelievable!

Anyone got one of these receivers lying around taking up space, I
could use one. I have an intermittant problem with mine that I cannot
find. Receive goes deaf then comes back. Thought it was some bad
solder joints, that did not cure it. It goes from -120 dB to -80
dB.
Then it begins to desence when this happens. If you have something,
please let me know. Thanks.
