I've got a 2 meter repeater on top of a 550 foot ridge that is surrounded by
less high ridges with canyons and valleys between----lots of deep shadowing
in my need to cover area-----about a 10 mile circle. My present antenna is a
Diamond X-50 -----chosen because I had one and the initial antenna had to be
short due to the mount that was available and I didn't want to overshoot my
coverage area with an on the horizon high gain design initially anyway.
I've now promoted a tower top antenna mounting position and it's time to
concider a better more appropriate antenna. Specifically, the mount is the
center pipe out of the top section of 40 feet of Rohn 25G. Anyway, whatever
the antenna, it must be a base end mounting design-----about 10 feet tall,
nobody would care----- about 15 feet, some would worry about
neighbors-----and at 20 feet, we would all worry.
The questions are-----What antenna is best for me and should I be
concidering some sort of drooped patern design or should I be satisfied with
the below horizon performance of a low gain antenna and just let it go at
that? The obvious return question is ---"How well does the X-50 work?" The
answer is pretty well except in the deepest of shaddows where it
doesn't-----the repeater can be heard in hot spots in most of our deep
shaddows with a handheld but a handheld isn't enough to reliably get back to
the repeater with. The best solution would or will be one or more remote
receivers but right now, a new repeater antenna is the task at hand.
Thanks much and 73'
