OK, here's the deal about tornado detectors. This info circulated in the
ESDA wx spotting comunity back in the late 60's. Don't know where it
actually started.
"Turn TV set to unused mid channel (5, 6. etc.) Set contrast to max.
Back off on brightness until raster (picture) just disappears. Tune to
channel 2 ( or 3 if 2 is in use locally).
Static will cause TV screen to flash. When TV screen stays illuminated
go to basement."
Of course this was when TVs had knobs that you could actually adjust.
I have no personal experience with this technique and disclaim any
responcibility for its use.

I've heard stories of people in the tornado areas watching an unused TV
channel in their area. Tornados supposedly generate noise in the lower
channels that you can see and identify as a tornado on TV.
