Bill,

I guess I'm having a "senior moment" because I can't recall previous
discussions on this specific topic, but those SMs are becoming more
frequent as time goes on...

It is always possible to use makeshift means to accomplish rough tuning,
but that simply is not something I normally need to do or want to do.
Ideally, a service monitor with SINAD measuring capability should be used
to adjust the receiver front end for optimum sensitivity. A low-power
handheld or signal generator and an S-meter can frequently get you to the
95% point which is often good enough. Perhaps it is worth repeating the
"Repeater Owner's First Commandment" which is that "Repeater range is
limited by the repeater's ability to hear distant stations, and NOT by
the power of the transmitter." Therefore, you should expend the greatest
effort, time, and money in optimizing the receiver signal through a
careful selection of an appropriate antenna, a low-loss feedline, a
properly-tuned duplexer, and a properly-tuned receiver front end.

Who knows, the TKR-x50 repeaters may work just fine out of the box, but I
wouldn't bet on it!
