So the spur(s) are coming from the exciter.  How far down are they from the 
carrier (dBc)?  Is there one also near 157.87 MHz?  & finally can you post 
a picture of the S.A. display?

My guess at this point is that the exciter's interstage filtering isn't 
adequate.  A simple pass cavity between the exciter & P.A. should clean it 
up, as the rejection of a typical 1/4 wave coaxial pass cavity 8.5% away 
from resonance is pretty high.

Too bad this didn't come up before Dayton - could have packed a can in the 
trunk too.
