well I did the same as you only on a UHF unit  had a guy sell it to me as a 
repeater and it was a base.  It took some work but got it to work.  One of 
the things in the UHF unit are all the filters on the receiver interconnect 
board.  The other do you have a station control card?  the last think you 
talked about I also had and just has to trace the circuit as I think there 
is a spot I had to add a ground.  I will try to remember but it was a number 
of repeaters ago.
