Bernd,
I think the police department usage was likely pretty low duty cycle
overall. With the amount of metal mass it takes quite a while for them
to get too hot, but once they do it also takes a while to cool down
again. I have a couple T856s set to 25 watts with a small muffin fan and
they stay very cool even after a few hours of continuous transmit.
About all you can do is set the power control potentiometer to somewhere
between 5 and 10 watts while watching both the current draw and the
spectral purity. On some units they will go quite low in power while on
others they become inefficient and sometimes spurious.
With regards to the TS5041, I do not have any knowledge at all. Some
base stations have a speaker select switch to route the speaker to more
than one receiver (I have one with three TXs and three RXs in one base
frame).
