Then your best bet is probably a dipole array if you want to have a pattern
somewhat close to omni. Personally I like the Sinclair lowband dipoles the
best, followed by Decibel, then Celwave.
If you don't have the vertical real estate for a dipole array, or if there
are other options that warrant using a side-mounted omni, I'd go with a
Kreckman antenna (www.krecoantennas.com). I have one of their CP-40A omnis
top-mounted on a tower that is notoriously bad for ice, so bad that both
Decibel and Celwave dipole arrays had been destroyed.
If you're on a tight budget, the Hy-Gain V6R is a decent antenna, but I'd
recommend replacing the hollow tubing radials with solid rod. The hollow
ones don't hold up well (I think they vibrate and develop fractures). I'd
also recommend using an insulated "stiff arm" about 2/3 of the way up the
antenna.
