Chris, You will quickly find that opinions about Spectrum repeaters are, shall we say, both mixed and passionate. I haven't owned, used, or even seen one, so I have no opinion.
I'd sure like to know why the Spectrum was removed from service. Was it malfunctioning, or did it simply lack some features? While it may indeed have been a stellar performer when new, it may need some significant upgrades and perhaps some repairs to restore it to its former glory. Some repeaters of early 80's vintage used bare crystals instead of TCXOs or channel elements, and they tended to drift. You may be able to get replacement parts, along with a mike, from the Spectrum factory. Go here: <http://www.spectrumcoms.com/> Regarding the duplexer, your selection should be roughly based upon three factors: 1. Transmitter power and receiver sensitivity 2. Whether you intend to go first-class or settle for coach 3. How much money you intend to spend on it Bear in mind that a good-quality BpBr duplexer with four 8" cans might outperform another unit with six 5" cans. You should also consider what other transmitters are at the site, and what the noise floor is at that location.
