Well, an HT output stage pretty much has to withstand infinite SWR, 
rather unpredictable "normal" load.  

I see what you mean though, the HT wouldn't "see" the cans anymore, and 
it's output would remain constant.  

As it happens, I have a pair of 3dB SMA attenuators that I can use.
