You most assuredly are NOT an idiot.

You are learning. That is the sign of intelligence. You asked an 
appropriate question in an appropriate forum, and ultimately arrived at 
your solution. 

We all are learning, thanks to knowledgeable and infinite wisdom and 
experience on reflectors like this.

If you could make friends with someone who has a TDR, you would have 
found your problem in a few minutes, what was happening, and where. You 
can map the entire antenna system from the feedline end.

If a quick check with a Bird doesn't show anything weird, the TDR is next 
on the line. Try one and you'll always be a believer. I prefer Riser Bond 
over Tek because R-B will work on 'wet' (powered) lines and has a more 
rugged front end than the Tek series. Something like a 1270 or1270A is 
worth every penny. If nothing else, read the tutorials at 
www.riserbond.com.
