You could probably do the same thing with an alphanumeric pager.  The Motorola 
Advisor, for example, had a stand that you put it in and it had an RS-232 
output.  You would have to have some other device/computer to strip off the 
date stamp, etc. and just deliver the text you want to the controller.  This 
device could also incorporate a password that would only let valid commands 
through.  Everything else would be deleted.
