Dan, You will probably get **numerous** replies to this question, so forgive me if I'm not the first.
The main complaint has to do with the construction of the cable. If I remember correctly, the outer shield is copper braid over aluminum foil. Over time, these dissimilar metals begin to corrode and when the cable moves - even slightly - the grating of the dissimilar shields will introduce noise into the repeater. If you go back through the archives, you'll find LENGTHY discussions on this topic... Some people still prefer to use LRM for their installations, and a few report no problems. Others report problems "up the ying-yang" using LMR. YMMV. I guess the bottom line is - if you are going to go through the trouble of installing a good repeater system **ESPECIALLY AT A COMMERCIAL TOWER SITE** the general consensus seems to be to avoid LMR. (Some tower sites may not even allow LMR - you'll need to check.) LMR may work quite well for you at a non-commercial location (such as a home repeater) but avoid it at any commercial sites. FWIW - I used 1/2" Heliax (180' run) and 1/4" Superflex for jumpers on my 440 installation, and I think the peace of mind was worth the added expense. Just my 2¢ worth... 73 de Mark - N9WYS -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dan I find this very interesting. This repeater ran on Belden 9913 for 7 years with no problems. Same duplexer, same power, same antenna. Please tell me why LMR cable is not good for duplex ops? It is no better or worse than 1/2 hardline. And for a run of 50ft using hardline is just not an option. I have a fiberglass 3db Maxrad UHF antenna on the tower also and am going to switch to this to see if the antenna is the problem. way too many folks disregard the fact that some of us cant afford to buy a DB-404 or something like that and have to use other options for antennas. Thanks Chuck for all the ideas...I will be checking into all of this over the next few days.
