Depends on what you call "close".  We've successfully coordinated/operated 
2 repeaters 15 kHz & only a few miles apart with no interference to 
either.  A combination of TX bandwidth limiting (deviation & modulation 
bandwidth), narrow IF filtering & some geographic separation has resulted 
in many successful adjacent-channel operations.

Sounds like we're talking apples & oranges here.  600 kHz is for 
same-system input to output spacing.
