Depends on what you call "close". We've successfully coordinated/operated 2 repeaters 15 kHz & only a few miles apart with no interference to either. A combination of TX bandwidth limiting (deviation & modulation bandwidth), narrow IF filtering & some geographic separation has resulted in many successful adjacent-channel operations. > 2 mtrs has enough trouble with 600 >khz spacing, to expect 16 khz is ludicrous.
