A 50 ohm splice is (hopefully) a true 50 ohm splice and for most 
frequencies well below 800 MHz I would not get excited. My major 
concerns with a proper 50 ohm splice after any impedance bump issue 
is the moisture barrier and mechanical stability. 

.... and unless you're running broadcast type power heating is 
not going to be a real problem.

Your most practical choice is a good one and from your reports it 
appears you folks did pretty well.
