Jay,

Not sure what band you are on, but antennas 3 ft apart is a problem.

A TX puts out not only its main carrier, but also wide band noise which will be 
on your receive frequency.  Also at 3 ft the carrier could be swamping the 
receiver.

Might comment on your antenna setup and band.
