Perhaps this was dropped in the newer KPC-3 command set, but my old
KPC-2 version 5.0 has this to say about the CD command:

CD INTERNAL | EXTERNAL | SOFTWARE               v3.0

...

When set to EXTERNAL, the carrier detect is supplied by an external
device, connected to the XCD pin on the radio port.
