You have in your possession a motorola syntrx radio. These were manufactured in Australia. You will need a specail microphone to use this as a radio. The mic has all the controls like channel change, squelch control, scan etc. For your purposes it will make an excellant single channel radio (if you do'nt get a mic) on 2m. The connector at the front is where the mic plugs in.
