Ben, I have a buddy in Deltona FL with exactly the
same problem. He tried his on several different
computers and had no luck at all.
He sent his RFGuys programmer to me, as I have one and
it works like a charm. His also worked like a charm
for me. So would probably do you no good to send it
back to the RFGuys.
I use an old IBM 390 laptop and I modified the
autoexec.bat file to let it boot to DOS without ever
reaching Win98. Just add a line at the end of the
autoexec.bat file on an older Win98 computer to do
this. The line added is:
pause
When it gets there, it will stop. Enter CTRL C and
it will ask if you want to abort the bat file. Answer
Y and it will give you the DOS prompt.
The DOS on the RFGuys distribution disk will also put
you directly into DOS, but I prefer to oprate off the
hard drive. I put the files in a new directory (PRG)
on the IBM and operate the programmer from there.
I have found that almost all the chips will program
without having the external power supply hooked to the
programmer, but to make sure, it is wise to hook up a
6 volt wall wart to the power port. I use an old
RS-100 power cube.
You are not the first to report problems on here, and
you can probably find some info in the past messages.
Lots of folks these days who did not compute during
the DOS years are a bit put-off by the steps you need
to take to program a chip.
The program included makes a 256 byte file to transfer
to the chip, but the actual transfer is done by
exiting the code generating program and useing the:
progx22
program to write/read/verify the code to/from the
chip.
I have now used mine many times for myself and for
some others on the list and have not had any problems
with the programmer. Some of the Phoenix radios have
some variations that the code generation program does
not take care of, but Rangr/Delta programming has been
flawless for me.
