You'd probably lose less hair and sleep just pulling the old VHF guts out, and 
building a WA6SVT colinear inside the old radome:

You'll wind up with a very rugged, trouble-free antenna for very little money. 
Also, you can achieve higher gain, since the same length radome will hold more 
elements on 220 than the old VHF unit would provide for conversion.

Just make sure not to skimp on any repairs if the gel-coat or hardware have 
deteriorated.
