If the "extra wire" is from the 15 pin male DB connector, that would be the Ign lead. The Ign lead goes to the battery or power supply. Make sure it has a 1 amp fuse in it, anything higher could burn your Spectra up. I have seen this many times, not pretty, and they smell BAD.
There are several configurations in the Spectra, Ign lead required for radio to turn on, Ign lead only controls the TX, and NO Ign lead required.
