A mini PLL synthesizer. I'd think a DDS would be more cost-effective & versatile now. Some DDSs such as the AD9834 also have provision for FM, which should yield highly linear modulation. Pair one of these up with a PIC to load the frequency tuning word & you're good to go. At around $10 a chip, & with most PICs much less than that, a sub-$50 product should be possible, which would make it a little more attractive. $160 to fully synthesize a crystal-controlled radio isn't quite worth the expense IMO.
